Artistry, An Afro – Caribbean Bronze Beauty
Robin Crudup is a very disciplined artist. Her Afro-Caribbean woman is quite special. Robin is primarily a portrait artist with a style that leans into expressionism. Meaning, vivid colors, some distortion of the “Bronze Beauty’s features and light is used to stir the emotions of her admirers.
Robin Crudup finds her greatest portrait challenge is drawing the eyes. Bronze Beauty’s eyes must be set “just so.” When the eyes capture the light everything else falls into place. Bronze Beauty’s colors pop and she comes alive. Her Afro-Caribbean ethnocentricity is evidenced by her beaded locs, pierced ears and bronze skin. The canvas explodes with textures and brillant colors. And lastly, this Afro-Caribbean lady has attitude.
Robin was a single mom in the 1990’s. Time management and income were a priority. So she started an artsy sign company, “RAC Art.” Her company custom made, hand painted “standees signs” on lawan board in acrylic paint. The lawan board was reinforced with plyboard and displayed in front of businesses. Restaurants wanted menu entrees painted on their windows whose eye appeal attracted customers. Good for you Robin, as the ‘ole people’ say, “necessity is the mother of invention.”

I was driving south on Crown Mountain Rd., off of Lionel Berry Scene Dr. After a bit the road bends to southward. That’s when I saw it, a tree and a living piece of art. Its’ four foot trunk was painted lime green with hues of yellows and touches of orange. Its’ knots, or burls spoke of a tree in stress and still it bore a healthy, green, leafy, crown. This is a Flamboyant tree, not yet in bloom. Flamboyant blossoms are often a fiery red. Pale yellow blossoms are less common. The lime colored trunk emphasizes its many textures. The effect was captivating. I pulled my car off the road and took a picture. I found nothing to identify the artist. A mystery that I may never solve. My secrete hope is that the blossoms will bloom a fiery red.
